DLP FAQ

What is DLP?
Digital Light Processing. DLP is the best all-digital display solution. It uses a matrix of millions of tiny little mirrors to turn on and off the light as it passes through a color wheel. These reflections then hit the screen to form the image. You can gain additional technical info on our DLP TV Tech page. The official DLP site is DLP.com. New! You can talk about DLP TVs in our DLP TVs Forum I have also postd my AVIA tweaked and original settings there if you want to try to tweak your set.

What are the advantages of DLP?
There are many:

  1. True Digital! All other rear projection TVs have to convert the Digital Signals of DVDs and HDTV to analog at some point. DLP does not. Only DLP helps maintain a 100% digital signal from start to end. (Plasma screen tvs are also digital.)

  2. Outstanding image! Images that look like the best CRT (Traditional Tube TVs) and Plasma screens, but that are 43", 50", 61" & 67" in size.

  3. Flat, non-reflective, matt-like screen. If you've ever been distracted by reflections on a conventional TV, you will love the DLP's flat, none refective screen. Many Plasma and LCD TVs still suffer from a shiny glass screen which just invites annoying reflections. Not so on the DLP TVs.

  4. Low cost. Compared to plasma, half the cost. Compared to LCD, about 50% less. Compared to the best CRT TVs, about 15% less. Plus DLP TVs offer sizes up to 67 widescreen inches!

  5. No burn in. Both LCD and Plasma screens will suffer burn in. (ie, if the image is left on a plasma or LCD screen and it does not change, it'll "burn" that image into the screen, never to be removed.) DLP does not have this problem. It's impossible because DLP TVs don't use phosphorus.

  6. Less environmental harm. Both Plasma and CRTs use phosphorus. DLP TVs don't use phosphorus.

  7. No dead pixels on DLP. LCD is good, but dead pixels are common and not considered a manufacturing defect. DLP uses micro mirrors deep inside the TV. No dead spots and no discoloration from edge to edge like some LCD's have.

  8. Lightweight: The best 40" CRT (tube) television weighs over 250 pounds! One rear projection TV weighs almost 400 pounds! Imagine trying to move that! DLP's RPTVs weigh 70 to 80 pounds. This means they don't require expensive & custom TV stands or furniture to hold them. It also means you'll save big on shipping.

  9. Small size. Most tube and rear projection TV's are at least 24" deep, some 30"! But DLP RPTVs are 17-18" deep. This means they will fit on most common TV stands.

Is DLP a proven technology?
Yes, over a million units of projection DLPs' have been sold since 1996. It's one of the most reliable image producing technologies known.

If DLP is so great, why don't they use it at the theaters?
Actually many theaters do! More and more are converting over as digital media takes over from film. Over 14 million DLP projectors have been sold already.

How does DLP RPTV (DLP Rear Projection TV) compare with DLP Front Projectors?
DLP Front Projection is 2 pieces, (projector & screen) DLP RPTV is 1 piece (a television). DLP RPTV has both pieces built into one small, slim, lightweight, movable television unit instead of 2 products permanently mounted at opposite ends of the room. :-)

What are some keys features to look for in a Widescreen HDTV?
Faroudja DCDi video processing & Progressive Scan DVD with component video input. To buy an HDTV without these features is wasting your money. Digital Video Interface (DVI) is also important if you want to be able to take advantage of future improvements in the technology.

Is there any maintenance on DLP TVs?
Yes, you will have to replace the lamp about every 5-10 years. All TVs have an indicator that will let you know when the lamp is about to burn out and you can replace it yourself. The current cost is about $200, but we expect the price to drop to $150 within next 3 years. Maybe lower after that.

Do you have a brochure on the Samsung DLP TVs?
Sure do. PDF format, 700K. Click Here for Samsung DLP Brochure.

What's the best way to optimize an HDTV or Home Theater?
The Avia Guide To Home Theaters is considered by most HDTV and Home Theater users to be the best resource for setting up & optimizing an HDTV and/or Home Theater system short of hiring a professional. A professional will charge you $500 to calibrate a home theater system. You can get 99% of the results for 1/10th the price with this DVD.

Are there any disadvanages with DLP TVs?
On 1st generation rear projection DLP TVs there was a problem called, "the rainbow effect." It causes a "rainbow" around very bright objects on a dark background. This has since been solved by increasing the rotational speed of the color wheel. Current generation Rear Projection DLP TV's do not have this problem. We've had our Sammy DLP for a year now, and never seen a rainbow that wasn't meant to be there. ;-)

Any other disadvantages?
Well they are in short supply right now and a bit hard to find. So if you find one in stock, buy it! :-)
